He was born David Robert Jones, but changed his name to David Bowie so as not to be confused with Davey Jones of the Monkees. Known as the "Thin White Duke," Bowie plays a magical inventor in the recent movie "The Prestige." The thriller, which also stars Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine, is based on Christopher Priest's 1996 novel about rival magicians in early 20th century London. Bowie's character Nikola Tesla was inspired by the real-life Serbian-American who discovered the rotating magnetic field.
