1970 – George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” and Elton John’s “Your Song” are released on the same day.

1974 – Having promised Elton John that he would join him onstage if “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” hit #1, John Lennon makes good by accompanying Elton on three songs at Madison Square Garden. It turns out to be Lennon’s last-ever live performance.

1987 – R.E.M. debut on the UK charts with “The One I Love.”
